This painting explores the gender identity journey that each individual embarks on after being delivered in to what is a binary system. The non-descript crates in the painting symbolize the "male" or "female" assignment given to each of us at birth. The unique human being beyond this label is for each person to explore, experience and express. The subjects in the piece represent varying experiences associated with how a person may relate to their gender. One subject sits with complacent acceptance, one is trying to escape their existing label, one joyously celebrates, while the subject in the foreground is lost, confused, and looking for where they belong.
